Transportation Safety & Compliance Lead
York Region District School BoardParkland School Division (PSD) invites a highly organized and systematic leader for the full-time position of Transportation Safety & Compliance Lead . The Opportunity: As an integral member of the Student Transportation Leadership Team reporting to the Transportation Director, this role is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of the Division’s safety governance framework and National Safety Code (NSC) compliance. This position is designed for a leader who thrives in a team-oriented environment. You will provide leadership continuity by offering cross-functional departmental coverage for the Operations Lead, Transportation Planner Lead, and the Director of Transportation. You will serve as a key liaison, working closely with contracted bus operators, municipal officials, and regulatory bodies to ensure a unified and safe approach to student transportation across the region. You are highly skilled in safety systems and compliance management, possessing a systems-level mindset and the ability to maintain professional composure under pressure. You possess sound judgment and the flexibility to support emergent operational events (including inclement weather assessments) outside of standard work hours. You are a natural collaborator who can translate complex safety standards into practical, everyday excellence for our students and staff. Primary Responsibilites: Maintain the Division’s Transportation Safety Risk Register and develop an integrated Safety Governance Framework. Implement the compliance operating system, ensuring all documentation is audit-ready and aligned with provincial standards; act as the primary liaison for external audits. Conduct structured compliance reviews and track corrective action plans to ensure transparent and disciplined follow-through. Manage escalated safety complaints through structured case management and conduct root-cause analysis on significant safety events. Partner with internal routing and operations staff to ensure safety considerations are embedded in daily service delivery. Lead student and driver safety initiatives, including the "First Ride" program and municipal traffic safety assessments at school sites. Provide direct supervision, coaching, and standardized safety protocols to the Transfer Site Monitors. Collaborate with the Operations Lead and Transportation Planner Lead to ensure routing and service delivery incorporate robust safety risk considerations. Support inclement weather assessments and collaborate with external partners to monitor road conditions for service continuity.Qualifications Education and Experience: Six to eight years of progressively responsible experience in transportation safety or compliance leadership within a regulated environment. Demonstrated knowledge of National Safety Code (NSC) requirements and Alberta regulatory standards. Experience designing compliance monitoring systems and corrective action frameworks. Proven experience supervising field-based personnel. Skills and Assets: Strong analytical and risk assessment capability; excellent written and verbal communication skills is required. Certified Transportation Safety Coordinator (CTSC) or Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP)is an asset. Completion of Safety Fitness Certificate (SFC) Compliance Course is an asset. Valid Alberta "S" Endorsement Instructor Licence is an asset.An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
